Major Things to Consider Before Getting Auto Insurance

Car accidents are more common than they should be. Even if you drive safely, you never know what kind of person you’ll encounter on the road.

But whether it was your fault or not, auto insurance can minimize financial losses in the aftermath of an accident.

If you’re going to be getting your first auto insurance policy soon, here’s all you need to know:

Minimum state requirements

In Massachusetts, there are stringent state laws that regulate auto insurance. According to the law, the required coverages are as below:

  1. For the category of ‘Personal Injury Protection,’ the minimum limit is $8,000 per person and per accident.
  2. In the case of ‘Bodily Injury to Others,’ the limit is $20,000 per person and double the amount per accident, i.e. $40,000.
  3. For ‘Bodily Injury Caused by an Uninsured Auto,’ the required minimum limits are again $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident.
  4. As far as ‘Damage to Someone Else’s Property’ is concerned, the required minimum limit is $5,000 per accident.

Coverages

By law, every auto insurance policy must comprise four basic coverages. These include coverage for the damage you caused to someone else’s property; bodily injury caused by an underinsured vehicle; bodily injury caused to others; and personal injury protection.

However, your insurance policy does not have to be limited to these coverages. Other optional coverages include collision and comprehensive. Collision insurance helps you pay for damages if the car gets into an accident with another car. The policy covers both repairs and total replacement of the car.

On the other hand, comprehensive car insurance will pay for all other forms of damage caused to the car, other than collisions. These may include incidents of vandalism, theft, and adverse weather conditions.

Finding the right agency

The insurance agency you choose makes a major difference. Investing in a good auto insurance company will mean less hassle for you, and will protect you from unscrupulous actors. Always go with an agency that has a strong online presence, well-defined policies, online payment facilities, and 24-hour customer service.

Take a look at how long the company has been in business and what their core values are. Reading up on customer reviews will also help.

A company that has well-experienced agents on board will take care of most formalities and will give you more value for money.
