Do I Need a Drivers License to Get Car Insurance?

Can I Get Car Insurance Without a Driver’s License?

The answer to this question – in Massachusetts – is yes. Auto

Many times this is done by a new driver who has just obtained their Learners Permit. Then when you actually get your license you will be added to the auto insurance as a listed driver. And you want to make sure you never have your Car Insurance Cancelled for Non Payment.

But in order to get car insurance in Massachusetts the vehicle must be in your own name.

So, you can register and insure a car in your name if you do not have a drivers license:

  1. Be sure you purchase the car so that it is in your name. You sign the title as the purchaser.
  2. Have a licensed driver who will be driving the car and who will be listed on your auto insurance as the driver.
  3. Your auto insurance rate will be based on the “driver’s” information – not yours.

It is very important to notify your auto insurance agent when you get your license. At that time you will be added to the insurance as a driver – and your auto insurance rate will change.

Even though the price may go up – you want to do the right thing and add yourself as a driver – because if you have an accident while driving the car – and you are not listed? This can be a bad thing – as the insurance company may then decide to deny your claim. You don’t want to go down that road. You are paying your car insurance each month to protect you. So, if there is a claim you want everything to be right about your insurance.

So, can I get car insurance without a driver’s license? Yes, but why would you want to? Just wait until you get your license because the sooner you do the sooner you can get lower car insurance rates.
